If you are using small hand held label printing machines to create custom-text for your pool labels, the information below may save you time. See also www.brother.com.
For the swimming pool owner, it is simplest to say that there are two types of tapes, ordinary and laminated. Ordinary non-laminated tape is for everyday use. Laminated tape is for especially wet or harsh environments.
Ordinary Non-Laminated Tape for Custom Text.
This is the type of tape used with the PT-65, a widely used inexpensive hand-held home and office label printer. Brother calls it "M Tape."
This tape and printer works fine for swimming pool applications.
Non-laminated tape is the cheapest and most readily available home and office labeling tape. No technical literature was available for it. Therefore SnapMark conducted its own tests and determined as follows:
- · Chemicals and Water. The legibility and adherence of Brother® ordinary non-laminated tape was still perfect after soaking for six hours in 10% chlorine bleach. Repeated wetting and drying did not adversely affect the labels when mounted on PVC and tightly covered by a SnapShield.
- · Fading Resistance. Brother® ordinary non-laminated white tape with black print, mounted on vinyl PoolStickers and covered by a SnapShield, was subjected to outdoor Florida temperature and sunlight for one-half year and the printed characters remained fully legible.
Laminated Tape for Custom Text.
Pool professionals and institutions may prefer to use industrial-strength laminated tapes intended for harsh environments. Brother® calls these types of laminated tapes "TZ Tape", "TC Tape, and "TX Tape".

Brother International Corporation's research determined as follows:
- Chemicals and Water. The legibility and adherence of Brother® laminated tape was still perfect after soaking for two hours in 10% chlorine bleach , toluene, hexane, ethanol. Ethyl acetate, acetone, mineral spirits, water, 0.1 HCI, and 0.1 NaOH
- Fading Resistance. Brother® laminated tapes have been tested and subjected to temperatures of 145 to 181 Fahrenheit ( 63º to 83º Celsius) for one year and the characters remained completely legible. Brother® reports that the background color on yellow tape and red tape color faded minutely, but the text thereon remained completely legible.
